Hedgerley Historical Society We welcome back Jane Robinson to present her talk on VOTES FOR WOMEN on Wednesday 5th December 2018 at 8pm Most people assume the fight for the vote - won in part 100 years ago - was all about the militant Suffragettes, but that’s not true. What finally won the hearts and minds of Parliament and the people was an astonishing six-week suffrage march - the ‘Great Pilgrimage’ - involving thousands of suffragists, or non-militant campaigners, from all around the UK. Following the publication of her acclaimed book about the Pilgrimage - Hearts and Minds - Jane tells the inspiring story of how these ordinary people came together and changed the world. We will then have a talk entitled TO THE SOUTH POLE WITH BUZZ ALDRIN by Prof Nigel Henbest on Wednesday 12th December 2018 at 8pm In 2016, Nigel was among a select group of 12 explorers who travelled to the South Pole with Moon-walking astronaut Buzz Aldrin. His talk reveals the challenges of living in Antarctica, the group’s adventures in rock-climbing above the frozen ocean and in exploring deep ice-caves, and the gruelling expedition to the South Pole itself - where Buzz was airlifted out to safety. With stunning images and videos, Nigel paints a vivid picture of what it’s like to experience the most remote and inhospitable location on Earth. Prof Nigel Henbest, FRAS, is one of the UK’s leading science popularisers – and a Future Astronaut with Virgin Galactic! An award-winning author and television producer, he specialises in astronomy and space. Nigel’s 42 books and over 1000 articles have been translated into 27 languages; while his 60+ television programmes have been screened worldwide. Nigel is a columnist for The Independent newspaper, and his consultancies have ranged from New Scientist magazine to the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Nigel will be travelling to space with Virgin Galactic around 2020. ...followed by seasonal refreshments Hedgerley Historical Society meet at Hedgerley Memorial Hall, Kiln Lane, Hedgerley SL2 3UZ Further details from John Lovelock 01753 647187 [email protected] 44 | hiyabucks.com
