What Lexie Loves... http://whatlexieloves.blogspot.co.uk/ Every year sees the Waterstones Children’s Book of the Year Award, a prestigious award celebrating the top children’s books of that year. I have been invited to attend the awards and by the time you read this, the winner will have been announced, but I thought I would share with you my favourites of the books that were on the shortlist (I couldn’t fit them all into one article!) The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine Set in Edwardian times, Sophie is a headstrong and determined young lady who works at Sinclair’s, the most magical department store in the world. However, when a man was shot and valuable jewels go missing, Sophie was there at the time and the finger of blame points to her. With the help of her new friends Lil and Billy, there are determined to find the criminal, however dangerous it may be… I loved this book; mysteries are one of my favourite genres of book and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. The description was vivid and the plot was very thrilling and really got your heart pumping in certain places. Definitely recommend for 9-11 year olds, particularly fans of Anyone But Ivy Pocket by Caleb Krisp or Dead Man’s Cove by Lauren St John. The Art Of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson The Art Of Being Normal is a touching story based around the subject of transgender, featuring David, a boy who has one very simple secret: he wants to be a girl, and Leo who likes slinking into the background and not being seen. This book really changed the way I think and has definitely brought out a variety of different emotions from me. In short I am currently reading this one, and so far I am gripped, it’s such an interesting idea. The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle Every year the Accident Season comes around, a season of cuts, bruises and broken bones. Each time, the Accident Season is more and more feared and one you can never escape. I have never read a book before anything like The Accident Season; it’s so unique. I cannot wait to keep reading it. This one was on the Older Readers category, so more for 12+. My Brother Is A Superhero by David Solomans Everything could have been different if I hadn’t gone for a wee at that particular time. Zorbon the Decider couldn’t have waited a little longer to give the superpowers to someone who’s actually read a comic, when Zack became a superhero, he didn’t know a thing about them. I really enjoyed My Brother Is A Superhero as it was humorous and packed with action and adventure. I would recommend it to 8-10 year olds. These are just a few of my favourites from the shortlist and, as I said, by the time you read this the winner will have been announced.
