What is Garden Design?
With the Chelsea flower show coming
up in mid-May and the designers taking
centre stage, I’m sure many people
wonder what all the fuss is about. If you
haven't got tickets yet then it's already
way too late. But why do tickets sell for
many times face value for what is only a
gardening show? I’m sure there are many
answers to this but I do think it proves
that the idea of a designed space outside
has come of age.
So what IS Garden Design all about? I’ve
tried to distill it down to five topics which
I will cover over the next few months.
The first topic is The "Inside-Out" principle. A garden
belongs to a house and needs to relate to it and help
the house 'fit' into it's space. So often a garden is rarely
used because the house builder put a simple patio in
a place that was convenient for them to build rather
than where it makes sense to be. The builder wants to
sell the house and rarely considers what will make the
garden a place that will be utilised. So often my clients
are surprised where I move patios and planting areas around but as soon as they move a chair
to where the seating areas should be and try it out then it's totally obvious why. The garden is
another room except that it's outside. When most people renew their garden they simply redo
what the builder did but spend a fortune to repeat the mistake and then wonder why the garden
is still not used. This is where a designer helps to maximise the garden 'spend' and totally change
your space and how it looks and feels and treats it like an inside space, your Inside-Out space..
A garden designer costs money but actually saves you money by avoiding mistakes. Next month
I’ll examine "The Borrowed Landscape" and why the space outside the garden influences how it
feels to be inside your garden.
