Ian Gregory’ s child-first coaching key messages
• Start with names – our names are personal; learning them is the door opener to trust and understanding.
• Think about the questions you ask – do they help a child explore their thoughts and ideas? What can you do to reframe your questions?
• Listen and learn – pay attention to the details children share and check back to show you’ ve understood.
• Seek open and honest feedback – and have a means to allow all children to have a voice in this. Think about how you can capture this, whether it’ s thumbs up / down, feedback forms, questions at the end of activities and sessions. And be patient with it.
• Reflect with peers – invite other coaches to observe and share insights; be open to learning from their perspective.
