If you are an animal lover or pet owner then you already know that having a pet can enhance your life. I Did you know that pets are also beneficial for your health and wellbeing? It's true! As long as you don't suffer from animal allergies, having a pet, be it a cat, dog, bird, fish etc. can provide a greater sense of peace and balance in your home. One of the greatest things a pet can provide is unconditional love in the life of the owner. They don't care what you've done in the past, or what mistakes you've made. They are there to give affection without judgment any time you need it. Studies show that just the act of petting a cat or dog, or even watching a fish in a tank, reduces blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate. Pets are especially helpful during times of illness. Studies from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine show that interacting with animals increases the level of the hormone oxytocin in humans. This is a hormone that helps humans relax and reduce blood pressure. More and more frequently pets are being found in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes and even schools because of the healthy affect they have on the humans they interact with. If you're having a stress out day, one of the best ways to get you relaxed and in a better state is to spend a few minutes petting your dog or cat. Not only will you de-stress, your furry friend will love the time spent with you! If you don't have pets, and aren't allergic to them, you may want to consider giving on a loving home and reaping the benefits of having a furry friend with benefits. The holidays are the perfect time of year to adopt a new member of the family! Check your local pet stores and shelters for information on animals that need a good loving home.
