"The Art of Excuses & How to Break Them"
If something is important to you, you will find a way, if not you will find an excuse”. As a trainer this
is a quote we use quite often around HitchFit. In psychology they identify excuse making “as a
defensive mechanism in which controversial behaviors or feelings are justified and explained in a
seemingly rational or logical manner to avoid the true explanation, and are made consciously.” It
seems that excuses come a dime a dozen when people come in and say they are ready to transform
their lives, but…(insert excuse here). People tend to make a conscious effort to justify why they are
not ready to transform their lives.
So what is the most common excuse used in the personal training world? There are a ton of excuses
made as to why someone is not able to transform. The most common excuse is, “ I don’t have time.”
Typically when this phrase is uttered from someone’s mouth they are really saying one of two things.
One, they don’t want to make time to workout in their schedule or two, that something else is much
more important than a workout.
Here are some helpful ways to avoid this excuse making and “have time to workout.”
1. First, would be to prioritize your time. Plan ahead on your schedule and write down times you can
dedicate 30-60 minutes for exercise.
2. Go to bed earlier so you can get up a little earlier, studies show that working out first thing in the
morning is beneficial for mood and overall energy levels throughout the day.
3. Get a workout partner. Working out with a friend can be great for motivation, and that extra push.
Not only that, but having someone else will help hold you accountable to keep working out.
4. Remember that your health is important and that our bodies were made to move! Studies show that
exercise deficiency threatens your overall health and mental well-being, and can shorten your life span.
