The
Clinstelet or
Chatelet was a royal palace and fortress.
In those days Paris consisted
now constitutes the city proper {la cM). It was
only of the small island on the Seine which
connected with both shores by a bridge.
Guarding this bridge on the north was the Chastelet.
Here resided the Provost
of Paris,
and
it
was the
seat of his tribunal
;
and, as
we have
already

observed, remained the special seat of the masonic tribunals till the French Eevolution.
Cliatelet has been destroyed, but the place du Chatelet still exists.
