Because Rayen Mahuida was a “women organisation”, boys tended to stop participating at a young age and preferred
spending their leisure time on the streets. Mothers complained that their sons were inhaling shoe glue (neoprene) in
“the wholes”, a wasteland bordering Santa Clara, and were participating in illegal activities.
When she heard that brother Peter had lost his job, she invited him to spend some time in Chile and try to start a youth
association which could offer them a more structured and educational pastime. Peter accepted. In Chile, he formed
a team with, amongst others, Marcelo Monsalves , Monica Castillo, Magaly Ibarra, Leo Sanchez; Mauritius Quezada
and Glory Salinas.
Together, they founded “PREDEL” (Programa Ecuménico de Desarrollo Local – ecumenical program for local
development). In its best moments, Predel offered a shelter to numerous individuals from the and helped them to find
their own route in life.
Whilst participating in a national conference of social workers, Peter met Monica Castillo, a nurse from Copiapó. The
two fell in love and married. In 1988 they got a daughter: Natasha.
