installed in 1948. Six more sororities were installed in 1949. By September 1966,
there were 13 sorority chapters, all in new houses built on revenue certificates.
Prior to his retirement Summer 1947, President Tigert reorganized the Dean
of Students Office. He believed that not enough was being done concerning
“student personnel” problems. He arranged for an external review of student
services which resulted in a thirty-page report citing the need for additional
facilities and personnel. President Tigert’s response to the external review report
was to add a “professionally-trained Dean of Students.” Then Dean of Students
Beaty became Dean of Men and the first Dean of Women, Marna Brady, was
hired Fall 1947. By April 1948, Dr. Max Wise was hired as Dean of Student
Personnel. The Dean of Men and Dean of Women positions as well as other
student services departments reported to Dr. Wise. For the most part, the Dean
of Student Personnel position was a precursor to what would eventually become
the Vice President for Student Affairs position. Dr. Wise had recently completed
his doctoral work at Columbia University majoring in student personnel services
in the College of Education. Per the 1948 UF Constitution, the duties of the
Office of the Dean of Student Personnel were “to administer a program of
orientation of new students in conjunction with the Registrar, the University
College and the student government organizations; to act as chairman of the
Committee on Residence Halls & Off-Campus Housing; to act as coordinator of
