Name: David Little School: Southeast Lauderdale Attendance Center Year Graduated: 1968
I started school in 1956 at Whynot School where my father was the principal. I was at Whynot for grades 1 – 4, Vimville 5 – 6, SE 7 – 12. The lower grades were on the east side of the Whynot School building. The school had oiled wooden floors with the old style student desks. The rooms all had a real blackboard and an American flag. And of course we said the pledge every morning. I remember having Mrs. Elsie Parten in 1st and 2nd grade and Mrs. Thelma Ford for the 3rd and 4th grade. I was the only boy in the 1st and 2nd grade. My mother was the principal when I was in the 4th grade.
During my elementary years at Whynot and Vimville, we played baseball every recess and half of our lunch. When I got to Southeast, I played basketball and football in the 7th and 8th grade. The coaches were Leon Ross, Richard Massingill and Stanley Shannon. After the 7th and 8th grade I only played football. We were the Sam Dale Conference champions in 1966. Some of the teams in the conference were Southeast, Northeast, Clarkdale, West, Kemper County and Decatur. That year we had beat Enterprise in regular season play. When we were invited to the Oil Bowl in Heidelberg we were matched against Enterprise for a second time. They beat us this time. Our coaches were Vonnie Mac Breland and Stanley Shannon. Some of the good football players I played with were Lee Minor, Leon Harper, Pee Wee Rutledge, Leo Harper, Ray Allen, Richard Holloman, Joe Fuller, Tommy Brogan, Bill Workman, Richard Fuller, Donald Shirley, Marlin Murphy, Wayne James, Woodie Webb, Wayne Allen, William Harper, Glen McInnis and Al Taylor. We played really good baseball while I was in high school with people like Marlin Murphy, Ronnie McCrackin and Danny Bailey. Vonnie Mac Breland was the baseball coach.
