be happy with their team’s performance. Both teams performed well for first-year performers with
penalties held to a minimum, very few mistakes in lining up and backfield exchanges. Overall it was an
exciting performance - one that county football fans will remember for a long time.
Clarkdale marched 57 yards in seven plays to put the first score into the book with less than three
minutes gone in the first quarter. Halfback, Sellers, was the big gun in the TD drive, reeling off runs of
35 and two yards before blasting over from the one for the score. Halfback Reese Williams had runs of
seven and three yards in the drive. Sellers’ extra point attempt was short. Shortly after the second half
opened it appeared that Clarkdale had another one in the bag when Martin faded and hit Sellers with a 35yard pass behind all the Southeast defenders, but a Clarkdale linemen strayed downfield on the play and a
35-yard pass was turned into a 15-yard penalty.
Clarkdale got to moving again late in the third period and marched 73 yards to pay dirt in 10
plays. The finishing touch was a tricky double reverse that sent Avera into the end zone untouched with
the game’s second touchdown. The play started on the Southeast 10 yard line. A 16-yard Martin-toSellers pass and the running of Sellers, Martin and Williams had put the Bulldogs in position for the
score. Sellers’ kick was wide to the left this time. After that second Clarkdale score, Southeast suddenly
got its offense to moving, scoring it only touchdown and coming close on another occasion.
Southeast struck quickly for its score moving 32 yard in three plays. The first was a 27 yard pass
from McInnis to Davis Williams. Garrison followed with a 25 yard scamper to the Clarkdale five and
Snyder provided the clincher from there. An attempted run for the extras point failed. Clarkdale defense
preserved the victory when it stopped the Southeast, after the Tigers had moved to the Clarkdale two yard
line with about three minutes remaining in the game. After that Clarkdale stuck to the ground to run out
the clock and get that school’s football history off to a successful start.
Next week Clarkdale hosts West Lauderdale, another school fielding a team for the first time,
while Southeast visits Northeast Lauderdale where football was started in Lauderdale County.
