The American warships
used to dock in the bay of
Palma. Frigates, destroyers,
aircraft carriers.
When the sailors got shore
leave they would land in the
gunboats. Their priority
was finding a woman.
The aircraft carriers would
drop anchor miles out from the
port. You could see them from
anywhere along the coast.
On the dock where
the boats landed they
installed a makeshift
office. The sailors got
their permits stamped there
as they came and went.
Next.
And we
knew where
they were.
There was a snack bar, too, where they
could get something to eat and drink
whilst they waited for their boat back
or decided what to do with their leave.
That was where we hooked them.
Señorita?
You señorita?
Oh, yeah!
“Señorina”.
