I was playing
Space Invaders
in the underground
mall in Plaza
Mayor. I didn’t
know it yet, but
that night I was
going to be with
a woman for the
first time.
I had got hold of a set
of skeleton keys at
a slot machine
repair shop near
my neighbourhood,
so I could play
for free.
As you’d expect, for a while I was the most
popular kid in the neighbourhood.
You just had to open the
little door with one of
the keys and press the
wire by the slot, just
like a coin would do
when it’s dropped in,
to get yourself a
whole afternoon
of fun.
I’d been playing for over two
hours when Gato appeared.
We’d nicknamed him that
because of his feline
features and elegant
demeanour.
