Danehill dominance
AFTER the retirement of Frankel, more
maternal grandchildren of Danehill
emerged into the limelight in 2013 to
give the late Coolmore stallion a third
consecutive leading broodmare sire title by
progeny earnings.
Prix du Jockey Club hero Intello and
Prix Jean Romanet winner Romantica
became the seventh and eighth top-level
scorers bred on the magical Galileo-Danehill
cross that produced Frankel, while My
Titania is by Galileo’s half-brother Sea The
Stars out of a Danehill mare. Danehill
proved his versatility with his daughters
also nicking with Iffraaj to produce top
juvenile filly Chriselliam and King’s Best to
produce high-class stayer Royal Diamond.
Mares by ever-dependable damsire
Sadler’s Wells produced 2013
European Group 1 winners Flintshire,
Neatico and The Fugue, while another
mainstay of this table, Darshaan, sired
the dams of Al Kazeem, Estimate and
Indonesienne. MS

DANDY MAN set the early pace in the
first-season sires’ race but at the end of the
season there was a clear winner in terms
of individual winners and prize-money:
Mastercraftsman, who was also the only
one to sire more than one stakes winner
– four altogether, headed by unbeaten
Racing Post Trophy hero Kingston Hill,
writes Martin Stevens.
Intense Focus was the only other
freshman sire to supply a Group 1 winner,
with his son Astaire (below) adding the
Middle Park Stakes to an earlier score in
the Gimcrack Stakes.
Mastercraftsman’s old racecourse
rival Sea The Stars was towards the
back of the field early in the season
but ran on well when the 7f and
one-mile juvenile races kicked in. He
finished with a double-digit tally of
winners, including several intriguing
maiden scorers and exciting CL
Weld Park Stakes winner My Titania.
