It was Sea The Stars who once again
provided the ‘X factor’ at Arqana when
Marco Botti smashed the sale record by
purchasing a son of the first-season sire for
€520,000 on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed
Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. Out of a Listed
winner from the family of Poliglote, the
colt was a €200,000 yearling purchase but
the pinhooking gamble certainly paid off.
Nicolas de Watrigant’s Mandore
International came off second-best for
the top lot but struck for the second most
pricey just one lot later, paying €230,000
for a Raven’s Pass half-brother to Grade 1
winner Mast Track.
Such lofty purchases contributed to a
2.6 per cent upturn in aggregate, while the
average increased by a fifth.
