According to Hindu lore, the Monkey God named Hanuman was born the son of the Wind God. He was born hungry and his mother could not satisfy him, so he jumped after the sun thinking it was a fruit he could eat. He chased the sun to Indra’s heaven until Indra intervened and cracked his jaw with a thunderbolt. Hanuman’s father was upset and sought for vengeance. He talked to Indra and they agreed that Hanuman should be immortal, so all of the Gods met in a cave and blessed him, and he was made immortal. Hanuman got into trouble quite a bit, and was often found tormenting saints that lived in the forest. All of the other Gods were aware of his antics, so they prayed to Brahma asking for a solution. Brahma took away Hanuman’s knowledge that he had any Godly powers making him unable to use them. He regained his ability to manipulate his size whenever the Bear God reminded him of his abilities, and he was soon completing all sorts of quests for the Gods and himself. He soon became one of the most popularly worshipped Gods in India. There is a very big problem in India, especially in the urban areas. As part of their tradition of worshipping Hanuman, the Hindu people feed monkeys every Tuesday and Saturday.
