Karma and Dharma rhyme and are used in similar circumstances, but it is very important to know the differences between the two. Karma, is the belief that what you do in your current life carries over to your next, along with influencing your caste or how fortunate/unfortunate you are going to be. Dharma however, is a sense of virtue or maintaining ethical behavior to your state and to constantly improve. You decide what type of Karma you are going to have by either following or going against Dharma. Think of Dharma as a rule that is enforced by the whole world. No matter how alone you think you are when you break this rule, someone or something will always be there to give you your consequences. If everyone was committed to this belief, there wouldn’t be need for law enforcement or violence.
Since these beliefs are a big part of Hinduism, this religion has created a lifestyle that is peaceful and isn’t quick to make rash or potentially harmful decisions. Hindus care about other people’s opinions and believe that everyone is connected to each other. If they are treating a stranger with respect, they are treating the whole world and it’s soul with respect. The annoying co-worker may irritate you and you can’t stand them, but if you walk your separate ways then you won’t be encouraged to mouth off to them, and your Karma will remain untainted. Karma isn’t like a ticket or a fine that you have to pay off or just hope no one thinks about. Karma sticks with you and it could either give you a nice shine to show off, or it could make you embarrassed to even show your face.
Dharma and Karma are very important aspects of Hinduism, they keep the people on task, hospitable, and always striving to become better. There has very rarely been instances of violence with this religion, so most societies where they accepted the religion and firmly believed in it would have violence free organizations. So you can see many reasons why even though the rulers may have a more spread out rule with the democratic government, the leaders still would want to have Hinduism as their official religion.
