The Four Class of Hinduism
Indian society is divided into four classes, according to their occupations.
Brahmins, the priestly class
The Brahmins maintain ritual purity by not eating meat or drinking alcohol, as this is seen as ritually unclean. They perform Vedic rituals, study the scriptures, teach, sacrifice and give and receive gifts.
Kshatriyas, the warriors
As seen as warriors they are there to protect others. THis class was traditionally considered part of the aristocracy.
Vaishya, the peasant, merchants and craftsmen.
Vaishya include landowners, farmers and moneylenders. The males of these three classes are called ‘twice born’ and when they are young they receive a sacred thread given in a special rite of passage ceremony.
Shudras, the labourers.
Shudra meaning peasants perform manual labour and are expected to serve the higher classes. They are allowed to eat meat and consume alcohol, but are considered unclean. Shudras are not allowed to study the scriptures.
