unsolicited advice about when
the abused wife should leave
which is often sooner than when
she finally makes that decision.
Far too often, we criticize the
woman for staying too long
while beating our chests and
boasting about how we would
never allow that to happen to us.
So, how can a book that
forces us to confront our own
misguided and often judgmental opinions about victims of
domestic violence be interesting? How To Knock a Bravebird From Her
Perch is interesting because it slowly draws
the reader in to realizing the condescending
nature of our thoughts about spousal abuse.
Pecan never really got over the death of her
protective and loving father, but it took her
decades to understand that. In the meanwhile,
she learned difficult lessons and suffered
through harsh challenges. This book reminds
us that instead of berating people like Pecan,
we should cheer them on.
