Why We Need This Woman
Behind the Camera

I
n the late 60’s during the civil rights movement, the television industry began adding people of color who were professionals
at their crafts. Gone were the days of Stepin
Fetchit like characters. African Americans were
thrilled and tuned in to every program where
there was anyone who looked like them. The
feeling experienced when seeing African American actors and actresses on TV and in cinema,
ushered in a sense of pride not previously experienced by the African American people. There
was a sense of arrival—not only for the actors
and actresses—but for the race as a whole.
