Editor’s Note W elcome back HimPower Family. As families prepare for back-to- school, something important may be missing from their sup- ply list because they don’t realize how much they need it. What is often missing are the tools to reduce anxiety and prevent depres- sion and bullying in school-aged children. Anxiety—something adults feel on a daily basis is triggered by different factors like: not having enough money, health issues, broken relationships, problems on the job and just plain living in a world that is filled with more problems than solutions. Anxiety manifests itself in many ways, depression and other mental health issues. Unfortunately, it is no different for children. From adolescents to teens, the pressures are relentless: homework, peer pressure, hormonal changes, feelings of inadequacy and bullying, all creating emotional distress, leaving these young people feeling confused, frustrated and alone to handle it all. As a parent, grand- parent, aunt or uncle, teacher, professor, coach, or concerned neighbor, you have a tremendous opportunity to help a child navigate through life’s difficulties. Here’s how. First, it is important to show them the Spirit of Christ in you through His love for you and the love you, in turn, give to them. This will help to estab- lish a bond and build trust. Secondly, show your willingness to listen and hear their concerns. Sometimes, giving them an opportunity to be heard is more important than you jumping to conclu- sions with well-meaning, yet ill-advised advice. Third and finally, be sure to use the tools and resources in the commentary and cover story to identify when your child may show signs of depression or bullying. By being proact ive, you can seek profes- sional help if it is needed before the problem becomes more serious. We hope you find this information helpful as you strive to help a child navigate the obstacle course called life. And while you are here, make sure to read the other articles written to inspire and encourage you in the days ahead. Blessings… Carol www.himpowermagazine.com  5
