Christianity Is Not About
Rules, It’s About Love

am horrible with cramming/memoriz-
ing. I can if I have to but I’d rather not. I
would rather understand a topic or issue
enough to discuss it in my own words. My
mind should be able to “wrap around” the
topic, then “devour and digest” the topic
into my spirit. This enables me share the
topic with conviction and passion, rather
than just standing as a stone, speaking
merely out of memory recollections. You
may be this way as well. With this backdrop,
imagine then, how I felt about Christianity
when someone introduced it to me as a book
of rules. How could I memorize all these
rules of Do’s and Don’ts and then strive to
obey them daily – flawlessly. These rules
here mentioned are a major dissuading fac-
tor to many wanting to follow the straight

and narrow way.
Imagine again, the relief I felt, the joy
unspeakable that flowed through the sinews
of my being, when I learned that Christi-
anity was not about rules, but about love. A
love relationship with the king. A love affair
between Jesus Christ and myself. Yes, there
are the rules, but all these rules are enrap-
tured in the commandment “…Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself” – Romans 13:9.
In a relationship, you love the other person
insomuch that you do not want to hurt
them. You do your best to be there for them
when they need you most. You are faithful
because your love for the other person
surpasses that of any other person. There is
trust you can’t betray. Christianity is like-
wise, not about rules, but about LOVE.
