and said I needed to talk … NOW. She set the time and I met her in a side room. I told her how my leader had gone to a more prominent leader to deliver the news that I was underperforming. I told her how low I felt and questioned if I needed to be in my new position. She stopped me and asked,“ Do you really believe that?”
I replied,“ I don’ t know.”
She repeated,“ No. Honestly. Do you really believe that?”“ Right now, I do.” I suppose, I wasn’ t hearing her, so she clarified.“ Let me ask you. Do you believe in God?”
“ Yes,” I swallowed. I thought that was obvious, but looking back I could see how my behavior would say otherwise.
“ So God wouldn’ t have put you here if you didn’ t belong here,” she said.
My unofficial mentor was absolutely right. God doesn’ t make mistakes. If He put me here, then this is where I belong. This pain, this hurt, the self-awareness was just a part of the growth process that I would have never discovered for myself and others if I’ d stayed in my old role. I belong here.“ For I know the plans for you,” declares the
Lord,“ plans to prosper you and not harm you, plan to give you hope and faith”( Jeremiah 29:11). Yes, I belong here, but I have to move forward. Moving forward is a part of the growth process.
My story about my past career tragedy( shall we call it) reminds you that you are not alone when going through professional turmoil. You are chosen to be in that pickle, but you are also chosen to come out of it stronger, more aware with a testimony to deliver to so many others, because yes, others are watching and learning from you. Sound familiar? Here are some steps to rise above the challenge.
ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHALLENGE
Start by acknowledging the challenge and the God over your career. Actually state, out loud, the challenge then follow up with saying God is my leader and the ultimate decision maker.
THINK ABOUT THE PROCESS TOWARD SUCCESS
Next, take time to determine how you will rise above and the situation. This includes watching others who are successful.
