Community group calls for action to protect Norwest Lake wildlife
A passionate group of local residents is stepping up to protect one of the Hills District’ s most loved natural spaces, with the Norwest Lake & Wildlife Group working to safeguard the area’ s wildlife and promote responsible community behaviour.
The community-based group is dedicated to raising awareness and educating visitors about the growing environmental challenges impacting Norwest Lake, as well as surrounding lakes and waterways. Their vision is simple- to see the lake’ s swans, waterbirds and other native wildlife thrive in a clean, safe and environmentally sustainable habitat.
Members of the group actively support initiatives that enhance the local environment, while also working closely with authorities and stakeholders to drive positive outcomes. A strong focus is placed on harm reduction, ensuring both wildlife and visitors can safely enjoy the space.
However, the group says increasing issues at the lake are putting wildlife at risk.
One of the most pressing concerns is ongoing fishing activity, despite clear signage indicating that fishing is not
permitted. Discarded fishing gear such as hooks, lines and sinkers is frequently found around the lake, posing a serious threat to birds and other animals, which can become entangled or injured- sometimes with fatal consequences.
There are also growing concerns around behaviour linked to some individuals fishing at the site, with residents reporting uncomfortable and, at times, unsafe interactions when attempting to raise awareness of the rules.
Another significant issue is the feeding of wildlife, particularly the use of bread. Large quantities are often thrown into the lake or used as bait, which can lead to poor nutrition for birds, disrupt natural feeding patterns, and contribute to declining water quality as uneaten food decomposes.
The Norwest Lake & Wildlife Group hopes increased awareness will encourage visitors to take greater care and responsibility when enjoying the area.
By promoting simple actions- respecting signage, disposing of waste properly and avoiding feeding wildlife- the community can play a vital role in protecting this valuable local environment for future generations.
