Remagine Art Prize 2025 winner
The winner of the Remagine Art Prize 2025 has been revealed, with Glenn Barley awarded the $ 5,000 first prize for his sculpture Digbabydig( 2), crafted from reclaimed clay, ceramic, glass, and lustre.
Glenn explained that the title references“ contemporary environmental politics and the source and nature of clay.”
“ This work is made from reclaimed clay, originally part of an interactive public artwork. Embedded within it are shards of pottery I discovered at Camperdown Oval, the original waste dump for the nearby Fowlers Pottery.
“ I’ ve used a lustre salvaged from a discarded workshop, along with other materials that will eventually re-enter the creative cycle in my studio. It was made using tools I inherited from various makers, including my mother-in-law. These tools carry the magical resonance of those who came before— and in time, some of my equipment will become part of that ongoing cycle,” Glenn said.
The annual Remagine Art Prize is presented by Hornsby Shire Council in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society. The competition challenges artists to respond creatively to the issues of waste and overconsumption. This year’ s theme, RE: THINK TO RE: PURPOSE, invited artists to explore the impacts of waste
production and to innovatively reuse materials in ways that help conserve our precious natural resources.
Chrystie Longworth received the Highly Commended Award and a $ 2,000 prize for her piece Detritus Sentinels.
“ Detritus Sentinels reflects on our entanglement with the environment and the quiet transformations that occur over time. It asks us to look more closely, to rethink what we discard, and to recognise the responsibility we share in shaping— and saving— the world around us,” said Chrystie.
Local Hornsby artist Zac Fenn was awarded the Local Artist Award and a $ 1,000 prize for his work Heavy Vehicles, Hornsby( Four Viewpoints).
Meanwhile, Tania Babic won the Youth Award( 18 – 25 years) and $ 1,000 for her drawing Plastic Home.
Michelle Trewin secured the Recycled / Reused Materials Award, receiving $ 1,500 for her piece Natural Lint, created using lint and thread on paper.
Hornsby Shire Mayor, Warren Waddell, praised the finalists for their inspiring contributions.
“ Congratulations to these deserving winners of the Remagine Art Prize. Through their thoughtprovoking works, these artists have powerfully expressed their commitment to sustainability and the environment.
“ Council remains dedicated to protecting our natural surroundings for future generations. This year’ s theme highlighted how each of us can play a role in reducing waste and embracing a more sustainable way of life,” Mayor Waddell said.
The esteemed judging panel for 2025 included curator Rhonda Davis and artist Marina DeBris.
