Rotary International is a global service organisation that brings together dedicated individuals committed to making a difference in their communities and around the world . Established in 1905 , Rotary focuses on humanitarian efforts such as promoting peace , fighting disease , supporting education and providing disaster relief . With over 1.4 million members worldwide , Rotary clubs create opportunities for people from all walks of life to give back and improve society . Alan Grady is one such individual who has dedicated his life to service through Rotary and other community initiatives .
Alan Grady ’ s journey with Rotary began 50 years ago in an unexpected way . At the time , he owned a business in Granville and had recently gone through a divorce . A local petrol station owner , with whom he had an account , invited him to a Rotary meeting , “ We do dinner and get guest speakers ,” he told Alan .
Looking for something to occupy his time , Alan decided to attend . That night turned out to be more than just a meal for Alan , it became the start of a lifelong commitment to service . Over the years , Alan formed lasting friendships , listened to inspiring guest speakers , and discovered countless opportunities to contribute to his community .
Alan has been deeply involved in Rotary Health , serving on committees and as a director for four years . One of his significant contributions was organizing a Rotary Health fundraising event — a race day that has been running for 20 years , raising an impressive $ 400,000 for health initiatives .
Beyond fundraising , Alan has devoted himself to hands-on volunteer work . Twice a week , he helps collect and pack medical equipment — wheelchairs , walkers , hospital beds , and blankets — which are then shipped overseas to countries in need . For over two decades , he has played a vital role in sending essential supplies to destinations such as Papua New Guinea , Fiji , Samoa , Nepal , Vietnam , and several African nations . Alan ’ s dedication ensures that the medical equipment is in good condition before being shipped , making a real difference in healthcare access for communities in need .
