THE POWER OF ... SERIES

The power of giving up

MOVIE TICKETS GIVEAWAY 200 % Wolf by Lorna Gordon

When we think of ‘ giving up ’ we usually associate it with a bad habit or things that are unhealthy for us , but sometimes giving up things which are deemed healthy , useful or a good habit can also work to our benefit !
Even good intentions can work against you sometimes , but how do you know when to put them aside ?
Our goals should work to our benefit but sometimes we set them too high and not meeting our expectations can make us feel like failures . However , switching up the goal we can ’ t meet for something that we can , may bring you the sense of achievement you have been looking for . For example , you may decide to set yourself the challenge of doing a marathon .
You begin training and realise that it ’ s taking up time that you also need to spend on work , family or household tasks . You decide to quit the idea of running a marathon and instead run 10km . It ’ s still an impressive achievement , but with much less stress and preparation required .
We tend to cling to goals for dear life , but our circumstances change throughout our lives and what has been something worth working towards has to change with it . Maybe you wanted a
PODCASTS
by Lorna Gordon
This month ’ s podcast comes off the back of the best-selling book of the same name . Book author , Mark Manson , his co-host and producer Drew Birnie , and guests talk about different topics and dive into some of life ’ s questions that you might not be sure how to address . Obviously given the title of the podcast , this one is not for little ears and does contain some swearing .
The first episode I listened to was about the Blue Dot effect , which discusses why when everything is going well and our lives are much better than they were even 50 years ago , we still feel dissatisfaction .
For example , society in general
corporate job and put a lot of time and effort into study , then working long hours to climb the corporate ladder , only to find that you are burned out and want to spend more time with your partner and new baby .
Your circumstances have changed and what is important to you has changed along with it , so it ’ s OK to say this is no longer working for me and do something different .
Sometimes being so focused on what we want stops us from seeing other opportunities available . We might want to earn more money and set out to get a promotion at our job to do this , becoming frustrated when we don ’ t get the positions we apply for . Instead of becoming disengaged with your work , you could have a different approach and take sideways step with a position offering more money and different experiences to allow your skills to grow .
I ’ m not saying that you quit everything when it gets hard or you will find yourself feeling like a failure who never achieves anything , but your goals and choices have to work for , not against you .
Changing path and letting go of what no longer serves you opens you to different ideas , new targets to work towards and a more balanced life .
is safer , but we still hear about problematic crime rates , and this is because when things are going well , we push the goalposts back to change our expectations .
A fun episode was the seven underrated habits for a better life , where they talk about under and over rated habits that are helpful for us . It gave a different perspective on what was useful and what activities are hyped up by social media trends .
One of their underrated habits for happiness is friendship , which is something a lot of adults struggle with and they have an episode on this which is very insightful .
While this podcast is definitely not for everyone , I found that there were some gems in the episodes that were insightful and gave a different view on ideas that are popular . You can find it on all you usual streaming providers .
