... FROM THE PUBLISHER ’ S DESK ... Your thoughts ? julie @ hdinews . com . au
What a vibrant , colourful and spirited cover we have this week , introducing NAIDOC week from 7-14 July . The event has its roots in the 1938 Day of Mourning and developed into a week-long event in 1975 . It is a wonderful celebration of the history , culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people .
Another loved community event is the annual Orange Blossom Festival , with events happening throughout September . As well as the familiar markets , parades and competitions this year a new food event is being introduced , A Taste of Wisemans , which will pop up in Wisemans Ferry Park at the end of the month , p9 .
A lot of activity is on the cards which will delight the outdoorsy in the community , such as the opening of Box Hills ’ s first sporting complex last month , p2 , Hills Shire Council ’ s plan for new
HDI pathways and playgrounds , p4 , and Hornsby Shire Council ’ s hosting of free guided winter bushwalks for all ages and abilities .
Mayor of The Hills Shire Dr Peter Gangemi announces this year ’ s budget of $ 162.8 million as one of the biggest in the Shire ’ s history , p5 . Also the annual NSW Community Building Partnership Grants have allotted a further $ 300,000 which is a healthy boost for the local community .
An article that stayed in my mind this week was Lorna ’ s Power of column , p14 ; Lorna talks about gratitude . In the busy lives we lead many of us have a mental check list that we tick off as we progress through our day , rarely stopping to say two small words , ‘ thank you .’ Try it right now , take your eyes away from this , look around you and say thank you for three things . I guarantee it will bring a smile to your face !
Until next month , from the team …
