The couple also give their time to Hills Spirit Soccer club and became involved in this through a long-time friend , Steve Wright . The club ’ s motto is Friendship over Results , and encourages all club officials , coaches and managers as well as players of all levels to deal with each other and their competitors with integrity and respect .

Chris is the referee coordinator and Katherine helps with the social media . Chris is focused on getting younger referees to join up by running Mini Roo ’ s instruction classes so that younger children can help referee their games . When the younger kids turn fourteen they can do a Level 4 referee course and work with older teams . I asked

Chris why he though refereeing was a good skill for boys and girls to learn .

“ It ’ s a confidence boost and teaches them life lessons in conflict resolution , which builds their skills in dealing with difficult situations on and off the pitch . It ’ s especially good for girls to learn these techniques , it can help them stand up for themselves and build self-esteem .”

Chris is also a manager at Baulkham Hills AFL , so is involved in the running of that club as well .

With a large family and being busy with work it ’ s impressive that they are able to give their time to these places . I asked Katherine why volunteering was such an important part of their lives ,

“ Volunteering is a way of giving back to the communities which have helped us . We have made lifelong friends through our volunteering . It ’ s a good way to meet new people and make new friends .

“ If you are volunteering at a school , particularly if you are new to the school , it ’ s a great way to find out more about the school and meet other parents , rather than just turning up to an event or sports game and leaving again . It ’ s worth investing your time and being part of that team or association .

“ I would encourage people to volunteer in as many groups as they can , as many organisation in our area operate with the same people doing a number of roles , so they would definitely appreciate more helpers .

“ Life is so busy these days , but if people can spare some time to help local associations out , it would be so much appreciated by the groups and members .”
