NEWS IN BRIEF
NSROC ’ s waste levy fund push
Mayors and councillors from across the Northern Sydney Regional Organisations ( NSROC ) met with local , state and federal MPs at NSW Parliament House to discuss how Local Government can ensure financial stability to maintain their capacity to deliver the level of service and infrastructure that communities expect and deserve .
Financial sustainability and waste infrastructure were identified as two of the critical issues .
“ Thriving communities depend on the delivery of high quality local services be it libraries , roads or recreation facilities ,” said Steven Head , general manager of Hornsby Shire Council .
Councils will also require a significant injection of funding for waste and resource recovery activities .
“ Sydney is in the midst of a waste infrastructure crisis and needs a fully funded strategic waste infrastructure plan . This could and should be funded by returning a significantly greater proportion of the NSW Government ’ s waste levy to addressing this critical issue and working with councils .”
Other matters canvased included the new Sustainable Buildings SEPP , infrastructure contributions , management of wildlife on development sites and ensuring transparency on planning decisions .
Beware of snakes
Hills Shire Council is cautioning residents to be wary of snakes in our bush and parklands because it ’ s snake season . The unusually wet and now warming weather are the perfect conditions for snakes to thrive in .
Storm water overflows and swollen creeks also assist in transporting snakes further afield into areas you may not consider seeing them – in your home , under your car or backyard walking trails . If you see a snake , be cautious and avoid touching , disturbing or going near them .
Taking care of business
The annual Sydney Hills Local Business Awards event saw numerous Hills Shire businesses recognised for exceptional work .
Four major awards were handed out on the night , including the new Disability Inclusion Award , ( which is partnered with The Hills Shire Council ); the winner was The Stage Door Performing Arts Norwest .
Business of the Year winner was Choice Paper Castle Hill ; the Youth Award was won by Angela Muhvich , Velvet Parlour Hair and Beauty Rouse Hill and Business Person of the Year won by Michael Graham , MGP Civil Contractors , Rouse Hill .
SES on patrol
Hills SES volunteers have been busy assisting flood affected communities in the Lower Hawkesbury in past weeks .
Volunteers went by boat from Wisemans Ferry to St Albans to check on the local communities that have been
isolated due to landslides and road and ferry closures . They also drove Sackville North , Lower Portland and Wisemans Ferry for welfare checks .
Farewell Sgt Joe
Sergeant Giuseppe ‘ Joe ’ Mammone retired from the NSW Police Force at the end of October . He was farewelled with a traditional bagpipe march out of the Castle Hill Police Station after his final shift , his colleagues forming a guard of honour as the party left the building .
Sgt Mammone ’ s career spanned 32 years with NSW Police .
