One of Rotary ’ s night of nights , the Pride of Workmanship Awards for the Hills-Kellyville club was held last month , recognising outstanding workmanship and community service of some of our best community members .
“ Rotary … recognises members of the local community for their special work that contributes to communities – in the Hills district or further afield ,” the club said .
“ While there are many people who contribute to others , they can at times be hard to find as so often these individuals work tirelessly for others and don ’ t seek any recognition for their work . So , the club seeks out these special individuals .”
The awards night and dinner featured special guests including Mark Hodges ( Deputy Mayor , The Hills Shire Council ) and Ken Broadhead OAM ( Vocational Chair , Rotary District 9685 ), along with Rotary members and club president , Ian Pascoe . Pride of workmanship awardees were :
• Rachel Nelson – Store Manager IGA Supermarket , Baker Cres , Baulkham Hills
• Dirce Pinto – Hospitality Services Worker , St Joseph ’ s Conference Centre , Baulkham Hills
Community service awardees were :
• Pankaj Patel – Flood Relief Leader , Indian Hindu Community
• Dilip Darji – COVID-19 Community Support Leader , Indian Hindu Community
Rachel Nelson Rachel has managed the IGA since 2019 . Her staff have often reminded her with written appreciation of her efforts and she is greatly respected by her peers and colleagues .
Her work ethic and leadership skills become apparent in the way she motivates her staff and leads by example by showing a courteous and professional approach to all customers . Rachel is a valued team player and assists with the staff in their day-to-day needs exhibiting a passion for team development helping her team with clear and effective communication .
Rachel ’ s community spirit is evident when she personally delivers to some of the elderly and infirm residents at the local retirement village and going the extra mile to even unpack and put their groceries away for them .
Dirce Pinto
Dirce commenced work in September 2008 at St Joseph ’ s Conference Centre , Baulkham Hills .
Sharing the kitchen co-ordinator position , Dirce works closely with her colleagues to provide a great service while the quality of the centre ’ s menu just keeps getting better , due to the high level of effort that ’ s gone into its preparation .
A good team worker and a great role model for the other work colleagues is the best description for Dirce . She encourages staff optimism with the people she works and displays the highest of work ethics . Pankaj Patel
Pankaj leads the flood relief effort on behalf of The Rotary Club of The Hills- Kellyville . He canvassed and encouraged 60 young members of the Indian Hindu Community in and around Blacktown and Hills LGA to reach out to the flood survivors in the Hawkesbury LGA . The volunteers helped clean up affected households along with the homeowners and provided survival kits containing essentials items such as fresh fruits , canned food items as well as cleaning equipment .
Pankaj was able to arrange volunteers with removalist trucks to help transport large items . A Rotary Disaster Response grant was used to purchase Bunnings and Woolworths gift cards and 20 of these cards were provided to families in need of immediate financial support . Dilip Darji
Dilip was the volunteer coordinator for protecting communities during COVID-19 isolation . He coordinated the sourcing of culturally appropriate items to put together Covid Essential Kits as well as culturally appropriate meals for many members of the community who were required to isolate at home . This activity helped many aged members of the community to get essential items .
Meals were also provided by 56 youth volunteers of the Indian Hindu Community along with phone conversations with the family members to reduce anxiety and stress caused by the isolation . Hills- Kellyville Rotary stepped forward to apply for a state government grant of $ 30,000 , which along with other donations , were able to help over 200 families . This work continues .
