Q & A WITH CANDIDATES : 2022 AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL ELECTION

The 2022 Australian federal election will be held on 21 May 2022 to elect members of the 47th Parliament of Australia . We contacted all candidates listed up until the 20th April for Mitchell and Berowra and asked them to be involved in a Q & A on the things that most effect the electorate . The candidates on these pages agreed to be involved and here are their answers to our questions .

Julian Leeser - Liberal for Berowra

Residential development growth is putting pressure on existing community and social services . How will your party address this , particularly for veterans and aged pensioners ?
Our government is committed to supporting all Australians to make ends meet . That ’ s why we ’ re focussed on creating jobs , investing in small business and ensuring young people get the skills they need . We ’ ve also ensured we support families to address the cost of living .
Almost 60,000 taxpayers in our community will benefit from tax relief of up to $ 1,500 this year and we ’ ve reduced the cost of fuel by 22c per litre .
We are committed to supporting veterans . In the recent budget our government committed an additional $ 369 to support those who have served our nation . This is on top of the $ 11.5 billion a year we invest in supporting more than 340,000 veterans and their families across the country .
We are also supporting pensioners . Close to 11,000 pensioners in our community will benefit from recent increases to the aged pension as well as over $ 500 in additional support over the next six months . Since we were elected in 2013 , pensions have increased by $ 179.20 per fortnight for singles and by
$ 270 per fortnight for couples .
We ’ re also continuing our record investment in aged care to help the 24,659 senior Australians living in Berowra . This investment will deliver more home care places , more funding for aged care centres and increases in the amount of time that nurses and carers spend with residents .
How will your party keep a district known as the Garden Shire ‘ green ’, manage its parks , waterways and green spaces with mega development constructions like the Gables , Hills Showground and Castle Towers redevelopment ?
Our government has invested locally in greening projects including regenerating mangroves on the Hawkesbury and supporting platypus habitats . I was also very pleased to support organisations in our community to plant trees through the Queen ’ s Jubilee tree planting program .
It ’ s important that we protect the environment all across Australia . Our government is investing $ 1 billion in world-leading marine science to protect the Great Barrier Reef , $ 636 million to expand the Indigenous Rangers Program for land and sea management and we ’ re investing in solutions to tackle
problematic plastics like bread bags and chip packets , keeping them out of landfills .
How will your party invest in keeping jobs local ?
Our government is supporting job seekers and young people . Australia currently has a record high of 220,000 people in trade apprenticeships . We already have 1,310 apprentices in Berowra and new measures in the Budget will lead to more opportunities for apprentices and trainees with expanded wage subsidies .
Over 20,000 businesses in our community will benefit from at 120 per cent deduction on digital and technology expenses and around 4,500 businesses in our community will receive a 120 per cent deduction when they invest in training for their employees .
Our government is ensuring the tax settings are right to support local businesses and keep jobs local . Over 20,000 businesses in our community can take advantage of the instant asset write off program which allows them to offset the full value of an eligible asset they purchase .
While we are all getting back to normal after two years of uncertainty , it ’ s important to remember the role
JobKeeper played in keeping thousands of local people in jobs and businesses running . Our government ’ s careful management of the economy has put us in the strong position we ’ re in now with unemployment at a 48 year low of 4 per cent .
How will your party protect public education funding and opportunities given the amount of exclusive , cashed up private schools in the district ?
As the father of two small children , I understand the importance of education as we give our children the skills they need as they become the future of our community . In the recent budget , we announced funding for public schools in Berowra would continue to increase as a part of the Quality Schools Package , increasing by over 32 per cent out to 2029 .
Total Commonwealth funding for education is projected to increase by 88.3 per cent from 2018-2029 ( from a 2017 base ). On average , funding for each student is projected to increase by 4.3 per cent every year . In the recent budget we also announced increased funding for preschools to make childcare more accessible and affordable . Ongoing childcare funding will directly benefit over 6,860 families in our community .
