THE POWER OF ... SERIES

The power of journaling

by Lorna Gordon
From beautifully decorated bullet journals to ‘ line a day ’ journals , the business of keeping track of what you are doing has never been bigger . Apart from enjoying beautiful notebooks , why bother to write about your day ? As well as being artistic if you include drawing , stickers or photographs , journaling is actually good for your mental health .
It can help you set and work towards goals . By writing down your goals you are making them more defined , which in turn helps you achieve them .
This could be a big goal for the year , smaller goals for each quarter or month , or a to do list for each day . Achieving even small goals has a positive impact on us and having it in writing reminds you what you have done and that you are moving forward .
Putting pen to paper and getting your thoughts and troubles out of your head can give you clarity and allows you to see what ’ s going on in your life from a different perspective . It can help you see patterns in your life , and enables you to work towards dealing with them in a positive way .
Journaling to practice gratitude is a huge trend . Acknowledging what you are grateful for each day has been proven to make you more optimistic .
This practice helps you to focus on the positive things in your life , which in turn , make you more inclined to look for the good in your life . It ’ s a win-win !
Indulge in your creativity by getting those coloured pencils , pens , stickers and washi tape out and make your journaling a creative expression . Art journals can follow daily prompts , reflect your mood or show what you did each day . Bullet journals are a combination of a written and artistic journal and are incredibly popular . How do you start ? If you aren ’ t sure where to start , you could think about buying a journal with prompts to get you thinking each day . You might try a oneline journal where you only write a short note about your day . There are courses you can join to inspire written or bullet journals , or you can look to Pinterest or Instagram to get visual ideas .
However you chose to keep track of your days I hope it brings you fun , clarity and a greater insight into your life .
