Gymnastics is a sport that is seen all over the world and competed in at the Olympics in different disciplines . Australia has produced some excellent gymnasts over the years , and 17-year-old Hills resident Ritam Malik is a star on the rise .

Ritam kicked off in gymnastics at the age of six which is the regular age for most people who compete in gymnastics . In the men ’ s gymnastics there are six disciplines to compete in : the floor , still rings , vault , parallel bar , horizontal bar and pommel horse . Currently Ritam is working them all , but his strengths are the pommel horse and parallel bars . He needs to work on floor and vault but is building up his skillset .

He recently returned from competing in an invitational event in Germany . The team challenge saw the best four people from all the countries in the world compete on a world stage . Ritam won the gold medal for Australia , which is his first international gold medal against 100 of the world ’ s best gymnasts from 25 different countries . You need to be a very rounded gymnast good at all six disciplines .

Ritam trains six afternoons a week plus Tuesday , Thursday and Saturday mornings which totals about 26 hours . The training he focuses on is landing and routines

which add a lot of points to your overall scoring . He is currently ranked second in Australia in gymnastics and is hoping that he can take out the national championships this year .

Ritam is working on all of the finer skills with the rings and vault and is working on strength and cross overs on the rings . He does some weight and strength and conditioning training . There is a lot of body weight resistance calisthenics to help with their endurance and mobility . Ritam said that if he only trained 3 – 4 days a week you just wouldn ’ t be able to compete at the highest levels . There are some excellent gymnasts in Australia including Jesse Moore , James Hardie and Georgia Godwin . Georgia is in the Olympic squad and the current Commonwealth champion .

This talented guy goes to Castle Hill High School which has a lot of incredibly talented athletes in different sports . There is not a major sports focus at the school and Ritam does most of his training in Sydney Hills Gymnastics at Bella Vista .

In the state level there are about 20 people in the u18s level that would be competing against Ritam , and in the girls ,

25 - 30 at the elite competitive level . Ritam has a big focus on his recovery time and his nutrition . The competition season is between February and May .

Ritam said that now he is up at the top he has to work extremely hard to maintain his position and compete with the best . Of the four people who represented the Australian u18s squad , three are from NSW . Ritam is aiming for the Junior World Championships next year , putting his and Australia ’ s name on the board .

He is hoping that training with the senior national athletes and continuing to build his skills and development that he will be able to be a squad member of the 2028 Australian Olympic Team . He also wants to compete at Brisbane in the 2032 Olympics and represent his country and hopefully pick up the gold medal .

Ritam is definitely a rising star and someone to watch in the future .
