SPORT WITH TOM SARGEANT Hills Rugby 1st grade find early form Round one of the 2nd division of Suburban Rugby Union has seen Hills Rugby win a tight and scrappy first grade match against UNSW. The match took place on 18 July and was a low scoring encounter, finishing 17 - 12. Although First Grade did manage to get the win on the day, there is no doubts that there is room for improvement. With the fractured pre-season schedule the team were rusty coming into their first clash but will only take confidence away from beating a strong UNSW side that will no doubt be fighting out the silverware in the backend of the season. Over the five matches throughout the day, Hills Rugby won two of five games at their home ground, Yattenden Oval, with 3rd grade also coming away with a tight and hard-fought victory winning 17-15. Hills suffered losses in 2nd grade, Colts and 4th grade with two of those losses being close games. Second grade was particularly unlucky, fighting their way back to be behind by one point, with a late try denying a comeback victory for the red and black. Moving forward the club will face Redfield Old Boys at Redfield College, in the first away game for the season on the 25 July. The Redfield side suffered a loss to a strong Epping, but the high-scoring game showed that both teams were dangerous in attack. The Redfield 1st grade side lost 38 - 29 totalling a huge 67 points in the 80-minute game. Defence will be vital for the Hills first grade side, if they want to continue their winning ways coming into the 2nd round. Redfield Old Boys will be looking to bounce back after losing in four of the four grades they fielded in a weekend that Epping got the broom out, leaving the ground with a clean sweep. In the next two rounds, Hills Rugby will take on Epping at home on 1 August, which will be a true display of their potential to take out the 1st grade and club championship title. Following that clash the Hills Rugby Club will travel to Soldiers Memorial Park to take on Lindfield. Lindfield haven’t been the same club since they received sanctions for paying players and will be looking to rebuild the club back to its former glory. Hills results at Yattenden Oval.
