EDUCATE ME
The first steps in
an extraordinary
learning journey
Kindergarten children start school with
a sense of wonder, they ask questions
and are curious about the world around
them. At Hills Grammar, teachers guide
and nurture these qualities in each child,
instilling a deep love of learning from an
early age.
A spirit of curiosity and
inquiry is evident in the vibrant
kindergarten classrooms as children
investigate the ‘big ideas’ of our world.
Following on from their Early Childhood
Education philosophy, play-based
learning nurtures early literacy and
numeracy, moving to more explicit
teaching as children grow.
At Hills Grammar, young learners
explore the concepts of belonging and
about community and families. Through
history and geography, they learn
about cultures and traditions. They are
introduced to the wonders of science and
technology as they experiment, invent,
hypothesise, test and record their results.
Specialist teachers are an integral part
of a student’s learning journey at Hills
Grammar. Kindergarten are
enriched by a range
of specialist lessons, spanning art,
drama, music, physical education
and languages.
The Kindergarten classes
are intentionally small, with an
emphasis on social emotional
wellbeing, kindness towards others
and the embracing of the school’s
values: Respect, Integrity, Service
and Excellence.
Michael Smith is Principal at the
school.
“Kindergarten is a year full of
wonder, joy and delight as the
first tentative, yet enthusiastic,
steps toward independence are
taken,” says Mr Smith.
“We endeavour in all we do,
to journey alongside children, to
build their capacity to become
independent learners and young
people, and to work in partnership
with families to foster the ‘potential for
greatness’ of each and every student.

“The foundational year of
Kindergarten is crucial to the attainment
of these outcomes, as we instil the love
and discipline of learning and marvel
as original character and personality
emerges and takes shape.”
