GREEN LIVING
How to have a green cuppa
by Lorna Gordon
How does your daily cuppa impact on
the environment?
Fancy a cuppa? I’m sure that most
readers enjoy a cup of tea or coffee on a
daily basis, but have you ever considered
the environmental impact of your daily
caffeine fix?
If you like tea or coffee from your local
café and drink it on the go, make sure you
invest in a keep cup that can be used over
and over again. Take away cups are lined
with plastic which is not biodegradable
and with the cups being classed as
contaminated from having coffee in them,
shouldn’t be recycled anyway.
The reusable cups have an
environmental impact when they are
produced, however as they can be used
repeatedly their overall effect is lesser;
and they look better than a paper cup,
just saying!
If you enjoy coffee at home or at work
from a machine which uses pods, you
can dispose of the pods responsibly. You
might find that your local council can’t
recycle them if they are put in your curb
side pick-up, but there are places which
will take used pods and recycle them.
If you want to go the extra mile,
stainless steel reusable pods are now
available to purchase. You can fill them
with your favourite blend and use over
and over again, saving you money and
lowering your environmental impact.
Tea lovers are not off the hook with
the environmental impact of tea, either.
Many commercial tea bags have micro
plastics in them which are difficult to
stop entering our bodies, our waterways,
and shouldn’t be put into compost piles
either.
To help stop this plastic pollution,
you can use loose leaf tea in a tea strainer
and bypass tea bags altogether. The tea
leaves which are left over are great to put
on your plants or in your compost and will
rot down to provide nutrients.
And for both tea and coffee drinkers,
here is an interesting fact, the carbon
footprint from boiling your kettle is far
greater than producing the tea or coffee.
So before you put the kettle on, think
about what impact your humble cuppa
can have and what you can do to reduce
it. Small changes in our habits can make a
big difference!
