MIX

An ideal transit station can’t just be transportation. Getting around or out of a city is important, but the best stations have places to eat, shop, live, work, and play around them. A mixed use area includes all of the above daily trips being within walking distance of the station, and specifically short commutes for lower-income groups. This means that there should be affordable housing near a station.

DENSIFY

Densification refers to the way most cities grow up rather than out. A dense neighborhood can result from a good transit station in the area, so the higher the residential, building, and labor densities, the better the station.

COMPACT

This criterion refers to compact development, meaning a city where various activities and uses are closely situated. The station development should be located in an existing urban area, and travel through the city should be convenient and efficient, both of which reduce the need for long commutes to and from the city.
