Figure 1: Maniks Ammonia Purifier
Ammonia purifier is often used in many processing industries. Water, dirt and oil residues are
non-avoidable in the all kinds of major industrial refrigeration plants where, ammonia is often
used. This causes large range of problems in the plant in general, and also in the compressors.
This means that the regular maintenance interval prescribed by a System Integrator is no longer
sufficient and the over-all operating costs of the system reaches an unnecessary high limits.
Water causes the oil to dissolve in ammonia.
Dirt is deposited in valves, filters, pipe systems and heat exchanger.
Oil in ammonia causes contamination, particularly in the case of low-pressure vessels
and evaporators
Analyses have shown that the typical content of water, oil, gas in ammonia which is used in
industrial refrigeration plants is near about 1-6 %, and in worst cases it’s up to 10%. Water in
ammonia has very harmful effects which lead to higher power consumption, increased
corrosion and that result in decomposition of oil, which contaminates the plant.
How you can tell if there’s water in your system?
Air-purgers systems only remove non-condensable particulates like air that is present in your
system. If your air-purger has been discharging air, it’s always leaving behind the water vapour
that’s been present in the air. If your recirculating evaporator is operating at few degrees
warmer than the indicated pressure, this is due to water present in Ammonia.
