ying to the north of the French Alps, the Jura form
an impressive arc of limestone hills. Our guided
walking holiday takes place in the western Jura where a
series of dramatic valleys and gorges harbour medieval
towns & villages, stunning waterfalls & lakes and a
patchwork of vines. Our easy to moderate walks explore
these “reculée” from above and below, allowing you to
discover historic gems such as Baumes-les-Messieurs, as
well as gaining some stunning views. During your week
you’ll get to find out about the Jura’s unique wines, such
as the famous Vin Jaune, one of the most prized wines in
France. Another highlight is visiting the Hérisson valley
which contains 7 amazing waterfalls in a 3km stretch.
Walks: day-by-day
Day 1: Arrival – Welcome, pick-up from Lyon & transfer to Jura.
Day 2: Baume-les-Messieurs
This walk explores the reculée (closed gorge) of Baume from above and below, with its
dramatic cliffs, interesting caves and picturesque waterfalls where water and limestone
are in permanent interaction. Located at the valley bottom is the beautiful historic village
of Baume-les-Messieurs with its abbey dating from the 10th century. 17km, +/-300m

Day 3: Chateau Chalon

This walks allows us to visit one of the most famous wine growing areas, as well as two
typical Jura villages, Menetru-le-Vignoble and the charming Chateau-Chalon which perches perilously on top of a limestone escarpment. With its pretty alleyways & typical houses, this village is one of the prettiest in France. Wine tasting in Chateau Chalon. 12km,

Day 4: Herisson waterfalls & lakes
We’ll visit the amazing Herisson waterfalls. Fed by a number of lakes, the river drops
250m in a series of 31 falls, each cascade being different in character with the highest
reaching 65m. After, we can take a short walk along the ridges to get views of this Lakeland region before relaxing in one of the numerous cafés and bars in the nearby villages.

Day 5: Arbois

Partial rest day as we visit the fascinating historic town of Arbois, home to one of the
vintage wines from the area. Visit the reculée which is guarded by the town and its
pretty waterfall. Wine tasting.
At a Glance
Day 6: Poligny
Our walk today explores the countryside around the historic town of Poligny. Our walk
traverses vines before climbing onto the cliffs which surround the town for wonderful
views. A brief walk on the plateau before descending back down to the valley where the
walk can be extended. 12-15km, +350m
Day 7: Vau
Today’s walk explores a sumptuous landscape of secluded valleys, harbouring quaint
historic villages such as Vau and Frontenay. Vines cling to the steep slopes below the
forest covered plateau above. Chateaux, historic farms and churches decorate the landscape whilst the villages have retained their historic properties. 13km, +200m

6 guided day walks. The walks are graded moderate. The average
length of walk will be 5 hours walking per day or 14km, with 300m of
altitude gain. The paths are generally good, but due to the nature of
the terrain include some rocky sections where care is needed. The
length of some of the walks can be varied depending on the weather
and the group's abilities. There will be plenty of chances to rest during
the walks.
Charming 3 star equivalent guest
houses or family run hotels. They are exquisite traditional properties offering an authentic and very comfortable stay with warm welcome. Small groups stay in B&B
style guest houses. Delicious local cuisine with wine.
Example: Relais des Abbesses in Chateau Chalon has
great rooms & provides wonderful cuisine.
