Secret Burgundy Trails

T he southern Burgundy is a treasure of historic churches, chateaux and farms set in rolling countryside carpeted with vines and forests. These two walks explore this beautiful area either side of the historic town of Cluny, with its quaint streets and historic monuments. In the south a number of rocky outcrops punctuate the vineyards such as the famous“ roche de Solutré” providing exceptional viewing points to admire the surrounding countryside.

Further north our holiday explores a rich landscape full of historic treasures, including medieval chateaux, historic Romanesque churches, old farms & beautiful villages such as Chapaize, Brançion, Ozenay & Blanot. Both holidays use small delightful guest houses.
Walks: Day 1: Arrival – Welcome, pick up from Lyon.
Charming small bed & breakfasts full of local character offering an authentic & very comfortable stay. They are mainly in historic properties that have been lovingly restored where you ' ll be reserved a warm welcome and enjoy mouth-watering home cooked cuisine. Example: Source des Fées is a wonderful guest house on a vineyard in Fuissé.
Day 2: Tournus- Cortambert: Pass through pretty rolling countryside with a number of picturesque villages lost in the hills such as Blanot. 20km, + 480m
Medieval Burgundy: The Monk’ s Trail
Day 3: Cortambert- Cluny: Visit the secluded village of Donzy le Pertuis, then finish your day at the remarkable historic town of Cluny. 14km, + 320m Day 4: Cluny- Cormatin: Follow the Grosne Valley with great views to Cormatin with its beautiful 16th century chateau and gardens. 18km, + 300m
Day 5: Cormatin- Bresse sur Grosne: A choice of routes passing through some wonderful medieval villages such as Malay with its remarkable Romanesque church, and the pretty town of St Gengoux le National. 17km + 150m
Day 6: Bresse- Brancion: Explore the beautiful villages of Bissy-sous-Uxelles, Chapaize & la Chapelle-sous-Brancion. Then climb through delightful countryside onto the ridgeline and discover the medieval fortress of Brancion. 19km, + 300m
Day 7: Brancion- Tournus: Pretty landscape of vines and historic wine-makers shelters passing through the timeless villages of Royer and Ozenay. Explore Tournus and its impressive abbey. 18km, + 350m
Day 8: Departure Transfer to Lyon
Walks Day 1: Arrival – Welcome, pick up from Lyon. Day 2: Fuissé- Pierreclos: A great days walking through elegant vine covered slopes. Climb to the top of the Roche de Solutré, site of pre-historic activities( dating back 35,000 years and favourite walking spot of former president Mitterand) & with a rich flora and fauna. Amazing views all the way. 15-23km, + 400- 580m Day 3: Pierreclos- Cluny: An interest-packed day. You ' ll pass by vineyards, pretty villages such as Berzé la ville, two wonderful chateaux, breath-taking ridges and tops and secluded valleys. 17— 21km, + 560m Day 4: Cluny- Mazille: In the morning, visit the remarkable historic town of Cluny before taking a scenic route to Mazille passing through a small intimate landscape of pasture and copses passing pretty villages & Romanesque churches. 11km, + 370m. Day 5: Mazille- Tramayes: Climb onto a picturesque ridge to reach Tramayes. in a wonderful location offering great views out over a timeless landscape 15km, + 520m Day 6: Tramayes- Fuissé: The ascent from Tramayes is beautiful and secluded as you enter a remote agricultural scene little changed in centuries. Your trail crosses the highest hills in the area providing stunning panoramic views. Descend to the valley slopes of the Maconnais vines. Wine tasting at guest house. 19.5km, + 535m
Days 7: Departure- Transfer to Lyon after breakfast
