Daniel’s tips
for success
• Work ahead: begin
studying several weeks
before the semester
officially begins and keep
ahead as far as possible.
That way, if something
comes up you can afford
to take a bit of time out
from study.
• Avoid distractions and
focus on the task you have
set yourself.
• Allocate time to study
and time to relax: once
you have finished a study
session, forget about your
books until the next study
session.
• Use your dreams,
ambitions and goals as a
motivation tool.
Daniel has big plans for his future, but his faith, hard work
and commitment to study will see him through.
exams. He says, ‘It’s important to
look at the future as much as the
present, because if you only look
six weeks into the future you’re
going to get discouraged pretty
quickly. So I’d say the best piece
of advice for staying focused and
achieving goals is to think about
your life and think about where
you’re headed and how you’re
going to get there’.
Seeing his older sister succeed in
her studies at USQ and attending
her graduation with all his family,
has also been a great motivator for
Daniel to study hard.
Daniel comes from a large family,
and is the third eldest of eight
children. While he loves being part
of a big family, he admits that it
can be difficult concentrating on
study at times with ‘nine people
rushing around you, working,
playing, watching TV, talking on
the phone, vacuuming… It’s just
endless!’ But Daniel knows his life
experiences prepared him for study
at USQ. Being home schooled
for so many years taught him
excellent time management and
organisation skills. Trying to study
in a house of ten people taught
him how to block out outside
noises, filter information and
concentrate on the task ahead.
Daniel loves being a USQ student
because he feels part of a
community. He says that ‘at USQ,
everyone’s in it together, and that
common attitude makes for a really
great atmosphere!’
