uni life YAWN OF JUSTICE Gotham vs Metropolis. Billionaire vigilante vs undercover alien. Bruce Wayne vs Clark Kent. VISIT OFFICIAL SITE Hollywood’s undying obsession with dramatic interpretations of popular comic book superheroes reached a climax in 2016 with the release of Ryan Reynolds’ narcissistic anti-hero Deadpool, the inevitable divide of the Marvel Avengers in Civil War and of course, the aforementioned Batman vs Superman. Without spoiling too much, Batman has beef with Superman because of his reckless disregard for the destruction he caused in the Man of Steel movie (and the fact people think he’s a better hero), so he sets out to eliminate his rival. This spite is only encouraged by actual bad-guy, Lex Luther, whose psychotic tendencies are amplified by his colossal inherited wealth. Has the makings of an awesome movie right? So what went wrong? Firstly, why does Wonder Woman’s character get minimal screen time and no back story, despite being the most interesting of all of the characters on screen? (Oh yeah, that’s right! Wonder Woman is actually in the film for all of 7 minutes). Then there’s just the overall script and storyline… You know a movie is boring when you need to add dream sequences in order to wind up in the action category of the video store. Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill were really disappointing in their delivery of any chemistry on screen. In saying that, Jesse Eisenberg (Luther) produced a performance that may have saved the film from total abomination. While Zac Snyder’s cinematography is artistic in parts, these are throwaway seconds and there’s no element of mise en scene. Snyder has done no repair to his reputation after Man of Steel and has created another snoozy ‘action’ film. Zac mate, it’s a superhero movie. Keep it fun.
