feature Get busy! For those who are close to Jen, they would know that she has a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Her business ventures started when she was a kid, picking vegies from her family garden and selling them out the front of her house with her siblings. They would sit outside all day and only make about $5. But, as we all know, good business doesn’t always happen at once, these things can take time. Since her first vegie stall, Jen’s business skills have grown and she’s had experience in: • • • • Making and selling dream catchers Becoming a skilled Henna artist Face painting with a professional business and Selling a lot of old clothes for cheap instead of throwing them out, as well as selling cool vintage and retro style clothing that she collects. This entrepreneurship has taken Jen a long way and she can now say that she’s finished working with larger businesses and is living off her own work – a huge feat for any business owner! ART FOR EARTHLINGS has been Jen’s project for the past year and she couldn’t be more excited about the direction her business is taking. ‘I’m a big Earth advocate, and a lover of the arts, and have put these two together to create this company. ART FOR EARTHLINGS is an online learning base for ecological conservation, with a heart of theatre and a whole lot of magic.’ If you want to know more, you have the opportunity to be some of the first eyes to see it at the Official Website Launch on 10 November at 4pm, at the Arts Theatre, in A block at USQ Toowoomba (and share some drinks and snacks afterwards)! While kick-starting this business has been challenging for Jen, she’s definitely found it worth the experience. ‘I have to spend a lot of time advertising my work, which can be tedious.’ As well as becoming her own marketing officer, Jen’s learned so much about dealing with money, saving, time management and business plans, all while increasing her creativity at the same time! But the best part about creating her own businesses is that she’s enjoying the work she’s doing. WORDS: JESS THORNTON – USQ Student IMAGES: USQ ONLINE MARKETING, SHUTTERSTOCK
