The men in orange, fresh from yet another championship, were suffering from the championship hang-over well into the season, meaning Brisbane Roar were late to take off. After the slow start we had a solid mid-season and managed to scrape into the finals. Arriving late to the season, the newly formed USQ Brisbane Roar supporters went to Suncorp Stadium on the 15th of April to enjoy their first A-league game. It’s hard to describe the way I felt about the first game. After a night of loud noises, hilarious over-reactions from ‘hardcore supporters’, laughter (mostly provided by the ‘hardcore supporters’), confusion and even a few ‘questionable’ calls by the referee, the Brisbane Roar were defeated by the Melbourne Victory 0–1. All in all, I would have to say that this night was brilliant. Of course after our team had lost, you may be wondering why I could possibly describe it as ‘brilliant’, but after the game we began to see what the night was really about. It started as a night where strangers and acquaintances met under the same banner, seemingly just to support our team. But during and after the game we came to realise that it was about the community and togetherness; we came together as acquaintances, but parted as friends. I think one of my favourite parts of meeting my new friends was that they all had varying degrees of knowledge of the game. One was quite adept at playing, another had never seen the game live before and others just enjoyed the game for its energetic atmosphere. The second game we experienced together was on the 24th of April, between the Brisbane Roar and the Newcastle Jets. The game itself felt more electric, more exciting — there were moments where you could not help but stand to cheer; I almost began to understand the people who yell at their televisions screaming “GO!GO!GO!”. We all felt the game was much more exhilarating and enjoyable this time around. While I still support my home town of Newcastle, the Brisbane Roar earned their victory over The Newcastle Jets with a finishing score of 2–1. #hearUSQroar WORDS & IMAGES: DANIEL CADDY – USQ Student
