Let me introduce you to your new
favourite crime-drama series. It’s
common knowledge that England makes
the best crime television (Sherlock,
Broadchurch, and Life on Mars for
example), so comes as no surprise that
Luther is an absolute winner.
Idris Elba (Mandela, Pacific Rim) plays
John Luther, a brilliant, brooding yet
morally erratic and emotionally unstable
detective. Dealing with the capitulation
of his marriage, his disregard for the
law he enforces, and the intensity
of the murder cases he solves, every
scenario he faces leaves you teetering
on the edge of your seat as he teeters
on the edge of sanity.
Luther meets his match in Alice, who,
without giving too much away, believes
she has committed the perfect murder
of her parents. Both transfixed and
intrigued by their shared brilliance,
the pair are drawn to each other in a
partnership that further alienates Luther
from convention and deepens his
troubled psychosis.
The real drawcard of this show is the
beautifully executed subtleties and
depictions of the characters, particularly
Luther. You won’t see much better acting
from a lead character in any show.
The reason I am suggesting you watch
this now, is because BBC America have
taken over in filming a US version for
season 4, so everyone should see it
before it loses its intricacies for more
explosions and gunfights.
