IGNORANCE ON THE SCHOOL CAMPUS

According to Tiana Parker's dad Terrance Parker the Deborah Brown Community School in Tulsa, Oklahoma sent his daughter home for wearing dredlocks as a style choice. School officials told Terrence that her hairstyle did not look “presentable,” according to local outlet KOKI-TV.

Terrance, who is a barber stated to the stated to the tv station that he always takes pride in his children going to school looking presentable.

KOKI-TV stated that the school felt that the hairstyle "distract from the respectful and serious atmosphere it strives for"

I took a look at the charter schools policy and it does state "hairstyles such as dreadlocks, afros, mohawks, and other faddish hairstyles are unacceptable".

What is unacceptable is the policy. Natural hair alternatives are unacceptable but wearing a weave looking all silky and straight is perfectly fine. The message that's sent to young girls is truly disgusting. Thankfully, the policy has recently been changed.

WAIT!! THERE'S MORE TO THE STORY!

According to www.sandrarose.com "The Charter school student body is majority black, and the curriculum prepares students for the real world, aka the workplace. Students are taught to take pride in their appearance which includes grooming.

It should be noted that the school's 5th grade teacher, Executive Director and Founder wears her natural hair under a curly twist out wig.

It is wrong for a leader to set standards for the student body and not oblige her to the very rules she created.
