JANUARY / FEBRUARY
ZAMBIA’ S FIRST MOBILE RACKING AND STATE-OF-THE-ART COLD STORE The Lusaka Commercial Cold Store, a greenfield project by Two Oceans Cold Storage, enhances Africa’ s cold chain with 4 000m ² of versatile refrigerated space. Completed in 2022, it features an economised single-stage ammonia system with DX and pumped coils, supporting-25 ° C to + 10 ° C storage, and full redundancy for reliability. Mobile and static racking maximise efficiency, while generators ensure uninterrupted operations. JAE Cooling Solutions oversaw refrigeration and panelling, with Acrow supplying racking. Pre-fabricated cooling units reduced installation time. BIM planning and co-ordinated logistics overcame challenges of landlocked transport and rainy-season delays. The facility runs reliably, with zero major downtime, and is designed for Phase Two expansion.

FRIGAIR 2025 From March to May the industry turned its full attention to FRIGAIR 2025, and we made space to profile participants at the expense of projects. The excitement was palpable – FRIGAIR has always been a highlight on the refrigeration and cold chain calendar, bringing together innovators, suppliers and thought leaders from across the sector. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase new technologies, explore emerging trends and connect with peers in a highly dynamic environment. The buzz and energy surrounding FRIGAIR reminded us why it’ s such a pivotal event for the industry, setting the tone for innovation and collaboration for the year ahead.

THE ROLE OF CO2 IN PORT ELIZABETH’ S NEW COLD STORAGE FACILITY A greenfield cold storage facility in Port Elizabeth enhances agricultural efficiency and export readiness with a flexible, sustainable CO2 refrigeration system. Matador Refrigeration engineered a transcritical CO2 plant capable of switching rooms between cold( 0 ° C) and freezer(-18 ° C) conditions, supported by hot gas defrost, eight sterile rooms and eight dock levellers for efficient operations. Remote monitoring and automation allow real-time adjustments and rapid response to issues, ensuring consistent quality and safety. The facility’ s design reduces energy use, supports year-round operations and meets stringent international standards, positioning it as a key, eco-friendly link for local farmers and export markets.

PANEL WORLD NAVIGATES COMPLEX COLD STORAGE EXPANSION FOR PHARMACEUTICAL FACILITY Panel World completed a complex expansion of a pharmaceutical cold storage facility in Longmeadow, Gauteng, overcoming COVID-19 disruptions, extreme weather and logistical challenges. The multi-phase project included large cold rooms(+ 2 ° C) and freezers(-30 ° C) using specialised B2 fire-rated polyurethane panels with cyclopentane as a blowing agent. Panels up to 130mm thick were installed manually at heights of 24m, requiring precise co-ordination and quality assurance. Advanced temperature monitoring and tripleredundant refrigeration safeguard sensitive products, while energy-efficient design maximises insulation performance. The project demonstrates Panel World’ s expertise in delivering large-scale, technically demanding and energy-efficient cold storage solutions for pharmaceutical and veterinary applications.
