HEAT PUMP SYSTEM FALLS WELL WITHIN ACKERMANS PHARMACY ’ S ELECTRICAL CONSTRAINTS When Ackermans Pharmacy relocated to larger premises across the road in Primrose , Johannesburg , the move was hampered by the constraint of a maximum electrical capacity of 150 amps . It found a solution with Toshiba ’ s SMMSu heat pump that falls well within its electricity supply . The retrofit was project managed by Derrick Kuun of Ackermans Pharmacy ; Graham Bloom , owner of HVAC contractor Cool Reactions ; and Naas Massyn Toshiba HVAC sales manager - inland from AHI Carriers . The challenge was to find a system that could operate within this restriction
while meeting the demands of a modern pharmaceutical facility . Toshiba was selected for providing the most cost-effective price that met all the criteria – and had stock available . Toshiba developed the design . Image credit : RACA Journal

NEW TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTIONISES PARK ABATTOIR IN EAST LONDON The owners of East London Abattoir set their sights on having the most energy and operationally efficient plant possible for their new pork production . GEA Africa , having done previous work at the abattoir was chosen for the design and installation , as their knowledge of carcass chilling as well as their associated quality and code compliance , made them the obvious partner . One of the project constraints was the limited power supply to the facility . The refrigeration system was designed to operate as a compound ( two stage ) system at -40oC / -5oC /+ 32oC . The high stage load primarily consists of three carcass chillers that are designed for a throughput of approximately 600 pigs ( at 95kg ) per day . An ammonia to glycol heat exchanger supplies chilled glycol to an air handling unit that maintains the deboning hall at the required optimal temperature . Image credit : Supplied by John Ackermann business called Jock Morrison & Sons ( JMS ) would be revamping a non-operational store in Mbazwana with the latest energyefficient , environmentally friendly supermarket refrigeration . The company manufactured and supplied 22 self-contained refrigeration units for this project , as follows :
• 6 X WC250JC – wall chillers ;
• 10 X VT250 – visitop freezers ;
• 2 X CGDW2440 – curved glass deli warmer ; 3 X CGDF1830SC – curved glass deli freezer ;
• 1 X CGM2440SC – curved glass meat case .
In KZN particularly , retailers and clients are often located near the ocean , where high humidity levels and salt in the air can cause premature rust on units . Just Refrigeration takes great pride in the high-quality stainless steel used to manufacture units .

Redline Consulting Engineers were approached by a major fast-food and restaurant group to design a new state-ofthe-art distribution facility in Durban , using the latest technologies and keeping longevity as well as reliability in mind . The project called for the new distribution facility to have a centralised transcritical CO 2
( R744 ) booster unit installed to provide cooling to the two holding rooms onsite : a freezer and a coldroom . Result Refrigeration was awarded the project to supply the centralised transcritical CO 2 booster unit . The refrigeration system for this project was based on a locally manufactured SCM Frigo transcritical CO 2
( R744 ) refrigeration system . The system is designed to supply 150kWR at -8 ° C for the coldrooms and 170kWR at -25 ° C for the freezer rooms . The system comprised 10 Bitzer compressors – four compressors on the medium temperature side , four on the low temperature side and two parallel compressors handling the flash gas experienced in the system .
