ONCE-IN-A-DECADE MINE REFRIGERATION PROJECT
The project involved the design and build of a large surface refrigeration plant to chill service water and provide air cooling for the underground works , as well as an upcast fan station on the ventilation hole . Ventilation and cooling form an integral part of the operational plan for Northam Platinum ’ s new block of ground . They would likely not be able to mine it economically without this new cooling infrastructure .

TAKING A WAREHOUSE TO PAR WITH GOOD WAREHOUSING PRACTICES
The temperature control of the indoor environment at Nkunzi Pharmaceuticals ’ 940m ² Warehouse 1 was found to be inadequate and Hi Calibre Engineering was appointed to upgrade the facility . The scope was to bring the warehouse up to par with good warehousing practices , specifically environmental control . This included remedial work done to the warehouse , installation of an Environmental Control System ( ECS / HVAC system ) that would maintain an indoor temperature between 15 ° C and 25 ° C and allow for future expansions to the warehouse , and a validated Environmental Monitoring System ( EMS ).

LARGEST DC PROJECT OF THE YEAR : PICK ‘ N PAY DC
Scale was the unique characteristic of the Pick ‘ n Pay Distribution Centre HVAC & R project , being probably the largest such project of the past 12 months , as well as the largest distribution centre in the southern hemisphere . The complexity of the HVAC & R project stemmed from its size – having multiple different cold rooms , multiple different temperatures and multiple different smaller areas each with different considerations .

NELSON MANDELA SQUARE : HONOURING AN ICON
The project was unencumbered by unrealistic budget restraints , together with a client possessing the appetite for an efficient , high quality and long-term solution , produced an end result worthy of respect and appropriate acclaim . The original water-cooled packaged unit arrangement was replaced with a chilled water system . Air-cooled chilled water generators located within the existing cooling tower plantrooms at high level , would provide the necessary cooling to ( 62 OFF ) bespoke chilled water air handling units .

SURFACE REFRIGERATION PLANT COMMISSISONED AT MALI ’ S LOULA MINE
The Loulo Mine in Mali recently underwent a significant HVAC & R cooling project , aimed at enhancing the refrigeration and ventilation systems within the facility . It was a full turnkey project commencing with a hole in the ground and ending with the handover of a fully commissioned HVAC & R cooling plant . The ongoing refrigeration plant project , as well as other infrastructure , will enable the mine to expand its operations and maintain its gold production output .
